Rethinking the existing: Transformation of the customer area at Hypi Lenzburg

Twelve years after the original refurbishment of Hypothekarbank Lenzburg, its customer area has been carefully reimagined

back to objects overview

The targeted renovation and adaptation of the customer area at the headquarters of Hypothekarbank Lenzburg responds to evolving clients needs while maintaining uninterrupted daily operations throughout the construction phase. The project focused on enhancing the overall quality of stay, improving orientation and wayfinding, and strengthening advisory services on the ground floor. The development process evolved iteratively in close collaboration with the bank’s management team.

At the outset of the project, several key questions guided the design process:

  • How can the customer area evolve while daily banking operations continue uninterrupted?
  • How can orientation become clearer and more intuitive for clients?
  • How can additional consultation spaces be integrated discreetly into the existing layout?
  • How can the existing interior fit-out be reused and upgraded sustainably?

A central aspect of the project was the conscious preservation and enhancement of existing furnishings in line with sustainable principles. Existing furniture elements were refreshed, reorganised and selectively complemented with new components. Their continued use within the new spatial concept reflects a responsible approach to resources and materials.
The new lighting concept reinforces the openness: more visible and carefully positioned light creates a welcoming atmosphere and enhances the perception of the entire customer area.

As part of the transformation, two traditional customer service points were replaced by discreet consultation rooms. The new spatial organisation encourages intuitive customer circulation and responds to the contemporary requirements of a modern banking environment.
The coffee and informal meeting area serves as a social hub, encouraging spontaneous interaction between clients and employees.
The material concept was also fundamentally updated: bright surfaces, subtle transparency and carefully orchestrated contrasts define the new visual identity. Illuminated ceiling boxes positioned above the main points of interaction act as visual landmarks, intuitively guiding visitors through the space.

The new customer zone at Hypothekarbank Lenzburg combines functional clarity, contemporary design and sustainable principles.

We would like to thank Hypothekarbank Lenzburg for their trust and for the constructive and pleasant collaboration.
