A welcoming, homely atmosphere: new concept for the LUKB branches

Luzerner Kantonalbank

back to objects overview

The Schüpfheim branch of the Luzerner Kantonalbank (LUKB) is the first of the bank’s branches to implement the bank’s new customer lobby design. The new conceptual design underscores the LUKB’s desire to present itself increasingly as a meeting place and point of consultation.

With our tender in a public competition, we were able to convince the 13-member jury that we were the right partners to develop and implement the new design. The integrated spatial, lighting and furnishing concept developed by Gehri is now being replicated at other LUKB locations. The Sempach branch is the next to be refurbished in line with this new design, something that gives us great pleasure.

With the increasing digitalisation of the banking sector, the role of the branch offices is also changing. The number of cash transactions in particular – whether processed at the counter or at the automatic cash dispenser – has been falling for some time. The LUKB is responding to this change in the business by transforming its customer service lobbies from simple “transaction points” into “meeting and consultation points”. Thanks to the new concept, staff in the branch offices are now able to devote even more time to providing their customers with comprehensive and competent advice.

Parallel to the digitalisation trend is a growing demand on the part of clients for trust-based, personal relationships in their banking affairs. As well as offering technical support, the LUKB thus aims to foster these relationships systematically. The LUKB branches will be made even more appealing to customers in future, while also offering greater spatial flexibility.

The LUKB continues to invest in its branch network because it is confident that its customers will use both the personal and the electronic channels in their dealings with the bank. This is why it developed a new concept for its branch offices in 2017. The first branch office to be refurbished in line with the new concept is Schüpfheim, and the second branch, Sempach, will follow in spring 2019. There are plans for other branches throughout the canton to follow suit, and experience gained in Schüpfheim and Sempach will be channelled into the alteration work in other branches.

What is new in Schüpfheim?
The friendly and open design makes the customer lobby in Schüpfheim into an attractive meeting point for all visitors. The LUKB staff receive their customers as hosts, welcoming them and, depending on their needs, accompanying them to a consulting desk in the lobby, or to a discrete private consultation room. The waiting area is welcoming and comfortable, designed to encourage spontaneous talks. There is no cash counter in the conventional sense of the word. It is however still possible to withdraw cash – as has been the case up to now, there are machines in the self-service area allowing you to withdraw or deposit money 24 hours per day.

The bank as a meeting place and events venue
With its new, flexible, modular spatial concept and the adapted professional profiles of the staff in the customer lobby, one of the aims of the Luzerner Kantonalbank is to transform the bank in Schüpfheim into a social meeting point. It will thus also be possible in future to use the facilities for events. The LUKB is currently exploring the possibility of making the customer lobby available after hours for external events such as the board meetings of local associations, for example.
